Art + Social Justice Group for Tweens
This is an in-person creative arts group for youth ages 8-12 in NYC who want to use art, theater and creative expression to make positive change in their community. Throughout the week participants will participate in art-based activities and theater games designed to connect with one another, build supportive relationships and express their thoughts, feelings and views on the world. Participants will be invited to look at examples of how art and theater have been used to create positive change in the world. Throughout the week participants will choose one issue to focus on and create a group project using art or theater to share with the community. Example themes include:
Fairness & Equal Treatment: Everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and respect, no matter what they look like, where they're from, or how much money their family has.
Standing Up to Bullying: Learning to speak up when someone is being left out, teased, or treated unfairly — and how to be an upstander, not a bystander.
Belonging & Inclusion: Making sure everyone feels welcome, whether at school, in a neighborhood, or in a group — especially people who are often left out.
Our Earth, Our Responsibility: Understanding how pollution and climate change affect communities — and why some neighborhoods are hit harder than others.
Knowing Your Rights: Learning that all kids have rights — like the right to education, safety, and a voice — and what to do when those rights aren't respected.
Celebrating Differences: Exploring how our different backgrounds, cultures, languages, and abilities make our communities stronger and more creative.
Fair Access to Food and Housing: Understanding why some people experience homelessness and how communities can work together to support everyone's basic needs.
Voices That Were Left Out: Discovering stories from history and today of people whose voices were silenced — and why it matters to listen to everyone.
Please note: While this group is facilitated by a licensed therapist, this is not a therapy group.
